technology lust

It's hard to believe it's May! I feel like I blinked and missed April.

We're at the halfway point in my pregnancy...this morning E remarked he needed it was coming fast and that he needed another 9 months!

It's amazing how many hours can pass by doing web research on a product. My research project at the moment is digital cameras. I got some very belated birthday money (was originally hoping to get a camera pre-Argentina) so now I'm set. After much thought, I don't think I'm ready to make the Digital-SLR leap. When E asked me why I wanted one, I said it was because I wanted to be able to take pictures where the subject is clear and background fuzzy. He said not to tell anyone that THAT was my reason. :) But I do think I want a good zoom and image stabilization. I'd like like to be able to take low light pictures and have a fast "turn on " and "between photos" lag time. A couple cameras I'm looking at include the Canon PowerShot S3 (highly recommended by friends, the husband sounds like an even more avid research than moi) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ-8. I think my next step is to go in to stores and actually check out these babies. When we were in Buenos Aires we tried checking out the Nikon D40 (an entry level digital SLR) but didn't get much out of the experience due to language barriers and not being able to actually take any pictures.

I have to say I have quite the electronic wish list going...

Digital camera

E's had his since 2002...my friend correctly guessed that it only has 2 megapixels...but it was quite a hotshot in its time"Minolta's DiMAGE X is the world's thinnest and lightest digital camera with a full, 3X optical zoom lens (as of Jan 1, 2002.)"

Television

I've never bought a TV. I think maybe I bought a used one in LA? Whose TV was that? Anyway, E didn't watch tv before he married me. Even now it's only infrequently. But I like a handful of shows, sports, etc. I married into a household with a monitor, that can be hooked up to a DVD player, and post-marriage, a tv tuner.

Samsung Syncmaster 150MP, 2001 (apparently a big electronic buying year for E)

Laptop

Actually, 2001 was a big electronics buying year for me, too. That's when I got my IBM Thinkpad T20...which, as I prayed, did survive through the defense of my dissertation.

Future? Lenovo Thinkpad X60s (1GB, 1.67 GHz, 100 GB Hard Drive, 3.5 lbs):

I certainly don't believe in getting the newest and biggest just for the sake of it...but maybe the best for your money at the time being since it'll have to last a long time? I think 6+ years between these purchases isn't that bad...especially considering how much has changed technology wise in the intervening time! Anyway, there is no way all three are being purchased any time soon. But one can like. :)
