57% of Manhattan residents have at least a bachelor's degree. In our neighborhood to the south, the number is probably much higher being right next to Columbia. But if you go north and east of us the numbers probably drop much lower being next to Harlem and public housing. The NY Times article reporting these numbers pointed out both possible pros (lower crime rates, less burden on city services) and cons (where do the service employees live, greater income inequity, less affordable housing). Though as we know, more degrees often don't always equal greater incomes. :)

32% is the percent for all of New York City (all boroughs together--Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island). The breakdown by race:
43% of Whites
42% of Asians
21% of Blacks
14% of Hispanic New Yorkers
"New York ranked fourth among the nation’s 15 largest cities in the share of adults with at least a bachelor’s degree...after San Francisco, San Diego and San Jose, Calif. In Manhattan the proportion neared 58, placing it fifth among the nation’s major counties."
Families
50% of Manhattanites live alone
10% of Manhattan households are married couples raising children
As we always suspected...
35.2% and 30.2% - New York ranks first in the proportion of men and women, respectively, who have never married
Age
29.3 The median age for first marriages for men in New York (highest in the country)
35.8 - The Median Age of New York
"Among the nation’s 15 largest cities, New York ranked second to San Francisco for the oldest median age (35.8), and third after San Francisco and Philadelphia in the proportion of people 65 and over (11.9 percent)."
Immigration
36% of New Yorkers are foreign-born, if you include their children their families make up 60% of NYC residents.
And a Non-New York Number...
"Seabirds, Rain Kept Men Alive for 9 Months"
Three men from Mexico were deep sea fishing and disappeared...only to be picked up by a boat run by Taiwanese men halfway to Australia. Amazing that they made it...it makes me think of the Life of Pi (the book). It also makes me bet that this outcome would have been much less likely if each had been by themselves instead of together.
