Highlights:
- Mom had a great birthday party: 75 guests at an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet, slideshow, favorite hymn, yummy guava cake, lots of friends in one place. It was fun to see old photos of Mom. Me and Mom:

- Getty Villa in Malibu: a beautiful place next to the ocean; Greek and Roman art isn't my favorite, but they had some great mosaics and pottery. I appreciated the variety of scenes that were depicted, including a mom and child in a "high chair." I also like the black and red 2-D figures.
The garden:

The ocean! :)

- 24, Season 5: Mom was so kind as to tape every single episode for us, some even without commercials. 24 and California....good times (saw seasons 1-3 there, too).
- Little Miss Sunshine: Fun movie about a quirky family driving to California in a VW van.
- Worship on the beach: In Chicago, we overslept on Sunday and missed service, so we went out to the shore of Lake Michigan, and with the songs (You are Holy and Great is Thy Faithfulness) from our friends' wedding and our Bible had our own service featuring a joint homily on the idea of convenant. It was a special time.
- Sorbet in-between courses at the reception lunch...so fitting of my friend getting married.

Random notes:
- One friend shared that they wouldn't put their kid in daycare until she could speak "or else she can't tell us" if something happens. I never thought of it that way. I guess that's an alternative to nanny cams...I've heard though that some daycares have cameras so you can peek in on your kid from work.
- I appreciate it when people make the effort, even when it's not easy or comfortable. My hubby makes an effort with my friends because he knows they're important to me. And even with some friends I hadn't seen in a while, even though it wasn't as comfortable as old times, it was okay and still good.
- My sister played a song from this mix she made for Mom and said it was "shameful" to admit who sang it....Stars are Blind by Paris Hilton.
- Ear plugs and direct flights...think we would learn our lesson. This time we had a family of four behind us, and much noise. We also ended up having to stay over in Chicago...our friend's fiancee was gracious enough to put us up a week before the wedding (this was on our way out to Cali).
- Continuing my historical kick, I've been reading Beyond Glory: Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling, and a World on the Brink by David Margolick It's fascinating to me how boxing has encapsulated so much of the history and culture of a time. When I think of boxing today I don't think that it crosses cultures and classes, capturing the imagination of whole nations.
It's good to be home. It's going to be a busy week though - 3 focus groups, and back to work on 2 papers and 1 chapter.
