Simone is and has been in the throes of princess love for a while. She knows what color dress goes with what Disney princess. When it's her turn to pick what to wear she always picks a dress because princesses wear dresses.
Yesterday at the library she was picking a video to bring home and saw with a princess on the cover called SweetPea Beauty. As you might guess, it's a Veggie Tales DVD trying to take advantage of princess love while sending the message that it's inner beauty that counts. On one of the bonus features they interviewed some little girls about things like who their favorite princesses were. One question struck me, "Do you like how you look?" So I turned to Simone and asked her. Her reply, "I don't know" with a shrug and a bashful smile. I told her I liked how she looked and started to extol her different features - her beautiful eyes, her lovely straight black hair, her brown skin just the same color as mine. Then she said, "None of them have color skin." None of whom? The Disney princesses? What about Princess Tiana, Jasmine, Mulan? Ah, we all know they don't stack up against Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty (her favorite) and Belle. I think it's good to start these conversations early. It does make me sad that there aren't ideals of beauty out there that fit what my daughters look like.
The only dress up clothes we have in our house are Halloween costumes (chicken, lion) and a couple of tutus. Simone loves going to her friend Addie's house because they've got lots of dress up clothes. I know she loves it. But it's a little scary.
A nice one of little girls:

Wow, Simone is very perceptive for her young age! I know you'll do a good job of keeping those lines of communication open. So nice seeing you and your family on Sunday!
