blessings and blues

It's a grey, rainy Monday. With all the summer sun we've been having, I'd almost forgotten how melancholy, potentially depressing, our concrete jungle can be when it's wet and dark. It doesn't make me look forward to being at home in the fall by myself with a baby. It will be okay. At least that is what I will tell myself now. It will galvanize me into action to find social contact. I will probably pray more. :)

It was a beautiful weekend though, so let's not forget the good. Saturday my sister and friend threw me a fabulous baby shower. We had fruit and cheese plates, guacamole and salsa with chips, mozzarella sticks, and a yummy mocha chocolate cake from Veniero's. There was "name the baby part" from a spliced sonogram, hot potato with a doll, and baby present bingo (had to guess what I would open). We received lots of great books and one-piece sleepers (guess those moms really know what you'll need!). It was great to have so many friends there. One even drove all the way down from Vermont. I'm lucky to know so many people, both single, and married, both with children and without, lots of good advice, offers of babysitting, etc. I love the favors which wrapped up were Jelly Bellys with tags featuring baby photos of Ezer and me. Others took pics I need to get, but here are the favors:
Speaking of good friends, it was nice to catch up with a couple of our small group members at brunch on Sunday. Our group decided not to meet over the summer. One friend, who is moving down the street in a few weeks, even came with me to Buy Buy Baby (yes, been there a lot lately) to help us use our 20% one item coupons (limit one per household). This weekend we got our crib, mattress, and car seat--thanks, Mom, for the gift towards everything!

The weather was perfect for E's NYC Triathlon. This year I didn't wake up at 4am with him to watch the race start to finish, but I did see the run in Central Park and was there to greet him at the end and take our traditional photo with his medal around my neck.
Last night I went with a friend to Hummus Place and to watch Knocked Up. For a movie that's been out 8 weeks I was surprised by how crowded it was (we were only half a dozen rows from the front...big theater). I thought it was okay. Some funny parts. I think I perhaps liked the insights of the married couple (main character's sister and husband) more than the young couple but maybe that's because I could relate...particularly the line about not wanting to have to ask him to ask her on a date to see Spiderman 3
A big thumbs up from J&e for a new movie called Talk to Me starring Don Cheadle and Chiwetel Ejiofor. "The real-life story of Ralph Waldo 'Petey' Greene (Don Cheadle), an outspoken ex-con who talked his way into becoming an iconic radio personality in the 1960s in Washington, D.C. Sparked by both the era’s vibrant soul music and exploding social consciousness, Petey openly courted controversy at a white-owned station. Relying on his producer Dewey Hughes to run interference, Petey’s unprecedented 'tell it like it is' on-air style gave voice and spirit to the black community during an exciting and turbulent period in American history."
The other big news of the week is that we launched our on-line survey of doctoral students in science and engineering. After a small glitch (um, turning the survey "on"), we've gotten about 225 responses so far (mailing list of 1600). Hopefully we will get more in the weeks to come..not sure what percentage we should expect realistically.

Interesting short read: Loverboy by Victoria Redel, a mom obsessed with her kid, the title should already tell you something, but don't worry, she's not a child molester.

Also, a big congrats to my sister-in-law and her husband on the birth of their new son, Kaden! He was born Tuesday 7/17/07...lucky kid!

I think they used a lot of averages because I was missing a lot of info:
Labor Quiz Results

I know you were hoping we weren't going to say this, but don't expect this baby to come early. Your baby is nice and comfy tucked away in your womb and has no interest in joining the rest of the world. We predict your baby will be born after its due date. Your baby will most likely be born in the morning. Justmommies predicts that your baby will weigh approximately 7.0 pounds and that your labor will be about 11 hours long.

This is for entertainment purposes only.

One psychologist's take on the type of people that tend to be late, late, late:

# Risk-takers: These people are addicted to the thrill of leaving for their appointed destination only when they absolutely must. They don’t mind taking the risk of being late, because they don’t want to risk being early and waiting for others. This may be because deep-down they fear feeling rejected, if they wind up waiting for others.

# Freedom-makers: Those who felt trapped by authority as children often grow up to be “late-niks,” who use lateness to feel free. Their intense wish not to be controlled by others may be at the root of their lateness. Or they may have a rebellious nature that essentially tells others: “You will not tell me how to run my life and when I have to be somewhere.”

# Organization-slackers: Another reason someone may be late is poor organizational skills. They have difficulty planning out a realistic schedule and calculating how long each of their tasks will take and how long it will take them to get to their appointments on time. These people generally have poor organizational skills, though they may be very intelligent.

# Trouble-avoiders: These people, unconsciously or even consciously, wish to avoid the people they are supposed to meet or the place where they are going. This may be the reason for their lateness. In these situations, lateness may be a form of passive-aggressive behavior. Since they’re angry that they must go to an appointment, they make others wait for them. These late-niks may not even be aware of their
