SoCal/ NorCal

I never really got the whole nickname lingo of NorCal and SoCal. I think only those Northerners use it. Hmm, I'm pretty sure it's NorCal and not NoCal. This difference ranks right up there with using "the" in front of freeway numbers (Southerns do this, Northerners don't). You take "the 405" to "the 605" to "the 5"....

My flight out to California: originally scheduled for a LaGuardia--Orange County flight, M60 was late, there was a car accident in front of us, my flight was delayed and they told me I would miss my connection, they put me on a flight from Kennedy--Los Angeles, at first told me they'd cover my shuttle but then made me pay for it because the delay was "weather related," the shuttle stalled in the middle of the freeway, our gate was changed five times, everything was incredibly backed up, we sat on the runway forever, and I arrived nine hours later than scheduled.

If I block out my horrible, no good flying experience, I can say that my ten-day trip to California was wonderful. I got to see my parents and lots of friends. I even drove up to see friends in the Valley (San Fernando). It's important to me to see my friends in context. I like seeing my friends' homes and meeting their families. I got to see Elizabeth Gilbert read at Vromann's in Pasadena with Dri--bad, bad customer service though...makes me want to stick with Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
I got to eat my favorite Thai food (mango and sticky rice, yum, yum), see friends from Boston who happened to be in town, try Japanese BBQ, share pregnancy notes with a friend's wife, go to the beach with Mom, attend my cousin's bridal shower, and celebrate Father's Day with my dad. It was all good.

Tanya and I had a great time in San Francisco. We got in Tuesday lunchtime and left late Thursday afternoon. Highlights included getting exercise on Russian Hill, the "Fantastic French Toast" at La Boulange, Alcatraz, the best mojito gelato ever, and girltalk. We also waited forever to ride a very crowded cable car, and had of those days where everything goes wrong: MOMA's Wednesday closure wasn't listed in the guidebooks, the free Victoria Houses tour was only on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, and the worst...a pickpocket experience (Tanya's wallet). Oh and there was the small problem with both of our cameras...Tanya forgot her charger and I ran out of space on my memory card (fortunately, I deleted pictures and Tanya showed me how to make future pictures take up less memory).
