Fluids, food, and friends

My sweetie is sick. Today is his second day at home. It seems like there's not much to do but rest, drink lots of fluid, and take some advil/tylenol. He's lucky to have close doctor friends he can call to check in with to make sure his temperature/symptoms aren't something serious. So far I haven't caught his stomach virus. We're both hoping it stays that way--you always worry a little more about getting sick when you're pregnant I'm guessing. I've been lucky--just one cold.

Today was my last day of school before spring break. I'll probably go in on Saturday as I left things in a mess. I have the event I've been coordinating tomorrow. I found out they fired the gentleman who had been filling the maternity leave position in chemistry. I was really surprised that they felt like that was necessary. I'm not surprised the kids had some issues...same thing happened to me when I first started. But maybe I don't know the whole story.

I sent in my quarterly estimated tax yesterday for my consulting job. Sometimes I like putting all the finances in order.

The best deal on guacamole - Trader Joe's. Two vacuum sealed packs for $2.99. Supposedly it's equal to five avocados. I even bought beef taquitos just because they go so well with avocado. I've been putting it on everything. :) At the local gourmet grocery store a tub of guac is $8.99!

We had a "meet the candidates" time after church last Sunday, a Q&A time with the candidates for the Mercy Team and the Session (elder). I was a little surprised that neither really did a "quiet time" more than 2-3 times a week. That's probably like me, but for some reason I thought others must be more spiritual than I. Not that that's a discrete measure of course, but I do think having spiritual discipline is important.

A couple of Sundays ago we had brunch with some out-of-town friends. I was talking to the wife about budgets for some reason and she happened to have a copy of their monthly budget and briefly showed me. It was really interesting to see. I do think it's a shame we aren't more free in our talk about finances with each other. It's funny how much what can be considered "essential" can differ. I told one friend that our leisure budget is $100 a month and she was like, "For both of you?" thinking it was low. Well, for this couple it was $25 per month! Also, their monthly non-tithe giving was quite significant. It was a good question to ask myself, "Can we be doing more?"

It was also interesting to talk about adjustments to marriage. She felt like she'd made more changes. I know for us, E felt like it was a harder transition. It's nice to have friends who are in similar places in life. But yes, it's also nice to have friends who are not in the same life stage. I went to hear a friend sing jazz with a couple of single guys. With my one guy friend who is the same age, it was like, "Wow, you're going to be two stages back" (now that I'm married and about to have a baby). It was also interesting to have the other guy along, a friend of my friend. I'd enjoyed talking to him at a group event a couple weeks before but it's quite unusual these days to make new guy friends who aren't part of a couple both E and I know.

What a beautiful afternoon. I can't wait for spring for real. :)
