culture

Someone asked me today what I liked about New York. Diversity, culture, food, and pedestrian culture were all up there!

When Mom was here we saw a couple of exhibits at Moma, one on Van Gogh painting night scenes and one I liked even better. I'm impressed that Miro went through so many stages with his art in that relatively short amount of time. And like all good artists, he made statements that riffed off the context of Western art as a whole.
"Joan Miró: Painting and Anti-Painting. Taking Miró's notorious 1927 declaration – "I want to assassinate painting" – as its starting point, the exhibition begins with his series of works on unprimed canvas, and concludes with Miró's return to realism in Still Life with Old Shoe."

I appreciate recommendations from friends in the know because I'm not up on anything. Tomorrow I'm seeing a modern dance performance, Pina Bausch. And my friend just got us tickets for a singer/songwriter Charlotte Martin.

It's snowing/sleeting out there. Our first big accumulation. This morning we didn't have Mom's Group so we went to a free trial class at Music Together. I've been debating whether to enroll S again for next term. It's expensive! But seeing how well she could engage and how much her musicality has improved since we started makes me definitely want to do it again. There's also the socialization part to it.

Also I invited any mom/kids who were free to come over. It was surprising to me that only one had been to my place before. I think it's true that I've been hosting things less post-Simone. Also, our space isn't that great for many kids. But it was nice to have people come over. For a while it was looking bad and I thought no one was going to come (even those who had RSVPd) because of the whether but we ended up having four moms and four kids plus Simone. A couple even stayed for lunch - made potato corn leek chowder and chocolate chip muffins last night.

How was the chowder? Sounds perfect for a day like today. We've got 6 inches on the ground here in Seattle.
