harvest time

We had a housewarming party on Saturday. Okay, so we moved in at the beginning of summer, but it took us a while to get our act together. :) A good time was had by all. I had fun planning a fall menu (sweet potato tarts, pumpkin muffins, hot corn dip, hot apple cider) and managed to pull it off with much help from my friends Angela and Lynn. Ezer was in charge of drinks and made sure our home was sparkling. I think we also managed to follow Ezer's mandate of not getting stressed out.

Yesterday was meeting day at church. I was a bit wiped out so afterwards I went shopping! Not for myself of course, when I get the shopping bug and I've spent my monthly allowance I scratch the itch by shopping for others! These are the books I bought for an upcoming baby shower:
- My Angel (there's a Precious Angels thing in the family)
- bright baby first words (for the word "car" the picture is a Mini Cooper!)
- Urban Babies Wear Black (Urban babies do yoga, enjoy architecture, visit galleries, take taxis at the end of a busy day)
- First Book of Sushi (I see take-out tekka maki, kappa maki packed togo. Temaki-style hand roll with uni urchin roe.Miso in my sippy cup, tofu in my bowl)
- Charlie Parker Played Be Bop (Be bop. Fisk, fisk. Lollipop. Boomba, boomba. Bus stop. Zznnzznn.)
- Olivia counts and Olivia's opposites (I like the bigger storybooks; here we get six teeth, seven accessories, eight cousins)

I have the feeling that my pics reflect the fact that I don't have children and that we all want to turn babies into little versions of ourselves.

Last week I had a good meeting with Columbia's Vice Provost of Diversity Initiatives. There's this post-doc at Teachers College Columbia that I want to apply for and thought it would be advantageous to do a project with this office. It looks like there's the possibility that I'll be able to do a project looking at why women and minorities leave science at every level (grad school, postdoc, professors).
